How do you check for silicone on painted surfaces

Continuing the discussion from Quick drying fillers:

We were talking about problem surface. He mentioned air fresheners causing problems on walls. We all know polish has silicone so, when looking at jobs, like window cills or varnished rails, we can also take it they have had Mr sheen at some point.

I always do a test for paint adhesion and check for powdery surfaces, but how can you check for silicone?
