Work experience

(darlic) #1

I spent six months, doing my house up in my spare time,I love anything attention to detail,i photograph everything made a few mistakes, and learned from them,my son worked alongside me.With my door i have done the first coat, but it needs a second coat but boy its gleaming, what i like about this site is being able to exchange, each others tips and techniques, but out off all the excellent articles on here, one that has been missed, and that’s obtaining work experience,i am trying at the moment to gain work for my son, part time ,in a specialized area off boats varnishing painting old wooden boats,to give him a taste, for a sample letter or CV,something i have never had to do,what would a potential, company want to see,he has little experience only with me,as for myself i have a website and leaflets, and a few work offers on the odd days which suits me,but would like also to offer myself,to workalongside a specialist on the odd days i get spare,my writing skills aunt excellent, but i do have portfolio, and come from top end off boats photos as well,my background has been all about attention to detail, myself i am not interested in slapdash work, and really just looking as a hobby part timer, and have a amazing decorating kit,and growing,as for speaking on phone i am hard hearing so for me its got to be a letter or email, but where to start.

Thanks andy traditional painter is my favorite site its dosent stop improving,i am looking for Saturday work in my area for decorating i am 40 and very keen, hard working,i had no response to emails from decorators so now going to teach myself the trade,i was even going to offer first day unpaid then minimum wage just to learn from specialist, maybe there should be work experience section on this site.My main problem is i work long hours in the week so taking day off for college not possible i am a lone parent,is there any books you could recommend,or ways you would recommend getting into the industry.I did write last time about able skills who do courses on weekends this suites me but it wasn’t recommended but they have glowing reviews,i went to college for 1 year of decorating course and loved it but got divorced so it wasn’t possible to continue making a living had to come first.

Hi I am in surrey near Staines, what I would like to see on this site is. Jobs work experience opportunities , the trouble finding jobs or work experience has been very difficult due to current climate, and a lot of decorators don’t even bother replying when you email them.I have dedicated myself to an hour a night when I get in also five hours on Saturday just to build up experience then may look at doing able skills coures next year they have range of decorating coures just to get six week hands on experience and city guilds under my belt. They also do wall paper city guilds five days check them out.

Could you send me a link for able skills, my concerns with these type of fast track NVQ is you wont learn a great deal, just box ticking!

Do you have any examples of work carried out so far and have you got a CV prepared?

Cheers

Here is the new section on the forum where decorators can post part-time vacancies or work opportunities for students seeking work experience.

Thanks, it is definitely on the radar to offer training and refresher opportunities through the network of Traditional Painters. We were all motivated novices like yourself and as more advanced decorators we are still enthusiastic to learn, so we know where you are coming from. The forum and site is the foundation for sharing our experience, so give us a chance to build on that and couch a workable and sustainable plan for practical help.
